Alternative Routes to Grizzlies Ballpark

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that a major rehabilitation and resurfacing project on Interstate 255 in St. Clair County will necessitate a complete closure of the highway for six months. Weather permitting, the closure will begin on Saturday, Feb. 1, and will span 3.5 miles from Illinois 157 to Illinois 15.

IDOT officials state that shutting down I-255 entirely will allow crews to complete the work in just six months, a significant reduction from the estimated two years it would take if the project were phased. The approach will also result in a cost savings of approximately $10 million, bringing the total project budget to $65.4 million. Additionally, eliminating traffic from the construction zone enhances safety for both workers and motorists.

This comprehensive upgrade, funded by the Rebuild Illinois initiative, goes beyond resurfacing. The project includes bridge repairs, enhanced safety features, upgraded lighting, new signage, and improved drainage.

The current phase follows the successful completion of similar improvements on I-255 from Illinois 15 to Collinsville Road in 2020. The latest work is expected to wrap up by July 31.

During the closure, motorists should anticipate delays and plan for alternate routes. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to posted signage, reduce speed, and avoid mobile device use while near the work zone.

As part of the broader Rebuild Illinois program, IDOT is investing $33.2 billion in transportation infrastructure statewide. Over the next six years, the initiative aims to enhance more than 3,200 miles of highways and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck.
