GRIZZLIES SHUT OUT RASCALS, WIN THIRD STRAIGHT

SAUGET, Ill. — Reign Letkeman, Patrick Boyle, and Dakota Smith tossed a combined shutout and Andrew Daniel and Gunnar Buhner homered Saturday night in a 5-0 Gateway Grizzlies win over the River City Rascals at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Gateway (36-53) won its third straight game, which matches the Grizzlies' longest winning streak of 2019. They've had three prior chances, but have thus far been unable to extend a streak to four victories in a row.

A two-out double from Connor Owings drove in two runs in the second inning to give the Grizzlies an early lead, which they did not relinquish. Daniel mashed a two-run homer — his ninth of the season and third in his last five games — on a line over the left-field fence in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0 and Buhner's high-arcing solo shot, his third big fly of the season, provided the final Grizzlies tally.

River City (52-38) dropped its second straight game — after entering the weekend series on a four-game winning streak — and fell 1 1/2 games behind first-place Evansville in the West Division.

Letkeman (4-4) earned the victory with five scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out three. Boyle and Smith followed with a pair of empty frames apiece in a combined shutout. The trio struck out eight Rascals in total.

Daniel and Zak Taylor both went 2-for-4 for the Grizzlies' only multi-hit performances.

Gateway and River City will finish their three-game series with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch Sunday, which will also represent an opportunity for the Grizzlies' first sweep of the season.
