GRIZZLIES BATS ROLL IN RAIN-SHORTENED WIN

SAUGET, Ill. — After scoring only 11 runs over the first four games of their homestand this week, the Gateway Grizzlies' bats came alive for nine runs over just four offensive innings Saturday night and cruised past the Washington Wild Things, 9-3, in a rain-shortened affair at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Gateway (9-11) snapped a four-game losing streak. The game lasted only four-and-a-half innings before the rain and high winds arrived, but Washington (6-15) had batted five times to make it an official game.

After the Wild Things struck for a run in the top of the first inning, the Grizzlies fired back with nine unanswered tallies over the first four innings.

Andrew Daniel continued his fantastic weekend with a 2-for-3 performance. He scored three runs and drove in two more, running his numbers to 6-for-7 with a home run, a walk, four RBIs, and four runs scored through two games against the Wild Things in the series.

Jamey Smart added a 2-for-2 night with a walk and two RBIs. Connor Owings and Matt McPhearson pitched in two-hit games of their own.

Although the Grizzlies did not hit a home run, Brent Sakurai, Owings, Smart, and Anthony Ray all doubled.

Dominic Topoozian (2-0) earned his second win over Washington in as many starts for the Grizzlies this season. He allowed three runs over five innings and struck out one.

Gateway and Washington will finish their three-game series — and the Grizzlies' six-game homestand — Sunday with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
