GRIZZLIES BULLPEN SHINES IN ONE-RUN WIN
CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies' bullpen tossed 3 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball to finish off a 5-4 Grizzlies win Wednesday night over the Windy City ThunderBolts at Standard Bank Stadium.
Kevin Simmons struck out the side in order in the ninth inning for his seventh save of the year. Josh Glick hurled a scoreless eighth, and Grant Black retired all four batters he faced — with two strikeouts — in his first game back after missing nearly a month with injury.
Gateway (25-33) moved within six games of the River City Rascals for first place in the West Division.
The Grizzlies scored two runs in the third inning on a two-out, two-run Terry McClure single. McClure has gone 4-for-8 with two RBIs, two steals and a run scored in his first two games back after missing three weeks with an injury of his own.
John Price Jr. drove in a two-out run in the fourth inning and Cody Livesay did the same in the sixth, knocking home Brennan Morgan after he walked and stole second. Blake Brown had a solo homer to lead off the sixth — his ninth home run of the year and the only Grizzlies run Wednesday night that scored with fewer than two outs.
Windy City (20-35) scored a run in the fourth, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth but went hitless against Black, Glick and Simmons.
Will Anderson (3-2) snared the win. He allowed four runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
Gateway and Windy City will play the rubber match of their three-game set Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Gateway will be looking for its first "true" road series win of the season: the Grizzlies have won four series at home and one at River City, a commuter series.
