GRIZZLIES COME FROM FOUR DOWN, WIN 6-5

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Gateway Grizzlies rattled off six unanswered runs Thursday night to beat the Schaumburg Boomers 6-5 in the series finale at Boomers Stadium.

Matt McPhearson led the way with four hits, including an RBI double, and scored two runs. After the Grizzlies (10-14) had only two four-hit performances over their first 21 games, four different Grizzlies tallied four hits in a game — three Tuesday, one Thursday — during their three-game series in Schaumburg.

Shawon Dunston Jr. and Brent Sakurai added three hits apiece and Jamey Smart drove in three runs to give him 18 RBIs in 18 games.

Gateway snapped a three-game losing streak and pulled within four games of the first-place River City Rascals in the West Divison at the quarter mark of the Frontier League season.

Cody Luther (1-1) tossed 5 2/3 innings and did not allow an earned run in a strong bounce-back outing. He struck out three and allowed five runs, but all of them were unearned.

Patrick Boyle, Dakota Smith, and Grant Black combined to throw 3 1/3 scoreless innings out of the Grizzlies' bullpen. They struck out six without a walk and allowed only one hit. Black earned his fourth save in five opportunities this season.

Schaumburg (15-9) scored four in the second and one more in the sixth, all off of three Grizzlies errors.

Gateway is scheduled to open a three-game series in Crestwood, Ill., against the Windy City ThunderBolts at 7:05 p.m. CDT Friday. Dominic Topoozian (2-0, 3.27) is the Grizzlies' probable starter.
