GRIZZLIES SWEPT IN DOUBLEHEADER, SERIES

SAUGET, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies were competitive in both games of a doubleheader Thursday and all three games of a series against the Florence Freedom this week, but lost 4-1 and 3-2 in the twinbill and were swept by a combined five runs at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Gateway (8-10) fell into fifth place after getting swept for the first time in 2019.

Florence (11-6) left seven runners on base in a scoreless game one until Taylor Bryant broke the stalemate on a grand slam over the left-field wall in the fifth inning.

Jordan Barrett (1-2) finished his outing with eight strikeouts and four walks over 4 2/3 innings.

Andrew Daniel helped Gateway answer in the bottom half of the fifth by punching an RBI single up the middle to get on the board, but the Grizzlies failed to close the deficit further in a 4-1 loss.

The nightcap remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when a fielder's choice off the bat of Connor Crane drew first blood for the Freedom, followed by an RBI single by Austin Wobrock. Down 2-0, the Grizzlies responded with a two-run Daniel blast over the wall in left for the equalizer.

Chris Carden allowed only two runs and struck out four over six innings of work but did not factor in the decision. Dakota Smith followed Carden with a scoreless seventh to push the Grizzlies to extra innings for the sixth time already this season in 18 games, but they lost on an RBI single by Caleb Lopes in the eighth.

Gateway welcomes the Washington Wild Things for a three-game set beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m. CDT at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
