GATEWAY EARNS SERIES SPLIT WITH 8-1 WIN

SAUGET, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies racked up a dozen hits Monday night en route to an 8-1 rout of the Florence Freedom at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Gateway (13-15) has won back-to-back games and earned a split of the four-game series.

Blake Brown and Jonathan Piron both hit home runs for the Grizzlies in a four-run sixth inning. Brown's was his third of the season — a solo shot — and Piron's was a two-run jack for his fourth big fly of the year.

Mike Elwood (2-1) tossed seven innings and allowed only one run on three hits. He struck out six in the victory, and lowered his ERA to 3.37 for the season.

Florence (11-16) opened the scoring on a first-inning solo homer from Keivan Berges, but the Grizzlies followed with eight unanswered runs — two in the second, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Gateway will close its seven-game homestand with a three-game series Tuesday night against the Washington Wild Things at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
