Trevor Richards to Start for Marlins against Red Sox

SAUGET, IL – Aviston, Illinois' own Trevor Richards is inked as the starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins against the Boston Red Sox at 6:10 p.m. CST on Monday, April 2, according to mlb.com. MLB.com reports, "With back-to-back contests seeing extra innings for the Marlins, they were in need of a slight, early-season rotation shakeup. Richards seemed like the logical candidate, as he allowed just one earned run across 12 innings this spring, with nine strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP." Read the full story here.

Richards went 2-0 in Spring Training starts over the last two weeks. Both wins were against Nationals hurler Max Scherzer. Richards threw four complete innings in his first outing on March 19. On March 27 he held the Nationals to just one run over six innings, even with four errors on the field behind him.

Richards pitched for the Gateway Grizzlies in 2015 and signed with the Miami Marlins club in 2016. Over the last two years Richards climbed his way through A and AA with the Miami club. In 2017 he posted a 12-11 record in 146 innings with a 2.53 ERA across A+ and AA. This year he was invited to Marlins spring training as an unsigned player.

Born in Aviston, IL, Richards pitched locally at Mater Dei Catholic High School before joining the Drury University baseball program in Springfield, MO.
