Bio

Jhonniel Alvarez is in his third year as a professional and his first year with the Grizzlies in 2018.

A native of Venezuela, Alvarez played college baseball at Ranger College (JUCO), Panola College (JUCO), and the University of Northwestern Ohio (NAIA) before he turned pro with the Texas Rangers' organization in 2015. He spent 2015 and 2016 with the Arizona League Rangers, and also received a cameo with the Triple-A Round Rock Express.

Alvarez brings excellent defense behind the plate — a 1.000 career fielding percentage as a professional — and a strong arm that he frequently shows off on attempted back-picks. He has also played third base and right field.
