GRIZZLIES CAPTURE WIN IN OFFENSIVE SLUGFEST
SAUGET, Ill. – The Gateway Grizzlies and Southern Illinois Miners exchanged home runs and extra base hits all night long before Gateway pulled out the win on Wednesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. FINAL SCORE: Gateway: 8, Southern Illinois: 7.
Gateway manufactured four consecutive hits and one run in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 1-0.
Southern Illinois third baseman Ryan Lashley answered quickly with a game-tying solo home run in the top of the second inning. After the long ball, the Grizzlies committed two consecutive fielding errors. Both runners eventually scored to extend Southern Illinois' lead to 3-1.
Both teams scored a run in the third and Gateway tied the score at four in the fourth on a two-out two-run home run by shortstop Brent Gillespie.
After Southern Illinois produced a two-run two-out rally in the fifth, Gateway responded.
Back-to-back-to-back home runs by Evan Rogers, Dan Holst and Chase Simmons to leadoff the inning gave Gateway a 7-6 lead.
Southern Illinois tied the score at seven in the seventh with a solo home run by Nolan Earley. The Grizzlies took the lead for good in their half of the seventh on a one-out single by second baseman Brent Sakurai.
Gateway hit four home runs on Wednesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Gateway will be back in action on Thursday night in the series finale against Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. All of the action can be heard on the Grizzlies Media Network.
