The Grizzlies acquired Tewell, 23, in a trade with the Sioux Falls Canaries on June 1, 2015. Tewell joined Sioux Falls before the 2015 season after playing three seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native played in 80 games for the High-A Lynchburg HillCats in 2014, hitting .251 with 12 doubles, 8 home runs, and 45 RBI’s. Tewell spent time in Rookie, A, and A+ ball where he hit .247 with 27 doubles, 20 home runs, and 108 RBI.

Tewell was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14^th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Appalachian State University. The left-handed hitting catcher hit .324 with 61 RBI in three collegiate seasons.
