GATEWAY SHUT OUT IN FLORENCE OPENER

FLORENCE, Ky. — The Gateway Grizzlies (24-53) were shut out for the second time this week by a brilliant performance from lefthander Braulio Torres-Perez, who delivered a five-hitter and a 7-0 win for the Florence Freedom (49-28) Friday night.

Matt Hearn, Terry McClure, Joel McKeithan and Blake Brown contributed the Grizzlies' four singles; Evan Rogers had a double, their lone extra-base hit.

Gateway received five walks to go with the five hits, but stranded seven runners and grounded into a pair of double plays.

Dalton Shalberg (0-1) took the loss in his first professional start. He threw five-plus innings, over which he allowed seven runs on eight hits. He struck out four batters and walked four.

Trevor Bauer worked two scoreless innings in his professional debut. He gave up one hit, struck out two and walked three. Tanner Cable hurled a perfect inning out of the bullpen as well.

Gateway returns to action Saturday night for the second of a three-game series in Florence against the West Division-leading Freedom. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 CDT on the Grizzlies Media Network.
