LANDSHEFT SHUTS DOWN TRAVERSE CITY, GRIZZLIES COMPLETE SWEEP

SAUGET, Ill. – The Gateway Grizzlies swept their first series of the 2017 season against the Traverse City Beach Bums behind strong pitching at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. FINAL SCORE: Gateway 4, Traverse City 0.

Gateway starter Will Landsheft pitched his greatest game of the season to this point. He pitched through seven innings, giving up no runs on two hits. He walked four and struck out six.

The highlight of the game was the first play in the top of the second. Traverse City left fielder Jeff DeBlieux was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run. That moment ended up being one of the few chances for Traverse City to get on the scoreboard.

Both pitchers performed admirably as there were no runs allowed through the first four-and-a-half innings.

Gateway's offense made its presence known in the bottom of the fifth inning. Evan Rogers sparked the offense with a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on a one-out hit by Cody Livesay. Two more Gateway runs crossed the plate thanks to a two-out single by Craig Massoni.

The Grizzlies added one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Craig Massoni crushed his fourth home run of the season (second of the series). Massoni had seven RBIs against Traverse City this weekend.

Gateway will be off on Monday before traveling to Evansville to face the Otters in a three-game series beginning Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. All of the action can be heard on the Grizzlies Media Network.
