LATE HOMER NOT ENOUGH, SCHAUMBURG SWEEPS SERIES

SAUGET, Ill. – The Grizzlies had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Craig Massoni struck out to end the game. FINAL SCORE: Schaumburg 5, Gateway 4.

 

Schaumburg left fielder Kyle Ruchim led off the game with a double down the left field line and came around to score on an RBI groundout by shortstop Josh Gardiner.

 

Gateway starter Vince Molesky then settled in and pitched admirably, only allowing one hit over the next five innings while striking out 10.

 

Gateway went quietly in the first three innings but tied the game at one on a two-out single by right fielder Terry McClure in the fourth.

 
After a scoreless fifth, Gateway took the lead in the sixth inning on a safety squeeze by McClure scoring Blake Brown.
 

Schaumburg went back to work in the seventh. A one-out solo home run by third baseman Kenny Towns tied the game at two. After three consecutive hits, the Boomers added three more runs. Schaumburg led 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

 

Gateway had its best chance to tie or even win in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bases were loaded with one out. Zach Lavy and Massoni both struck out and Schaumburg completed the series sweep.

 

Molesky took the loss after departing from the game after 6 1/3 innings. He threw 98 pitches, walked one and struck out 10 while allowing four earned runs.

 

Terry McClure picked up two RBIs at the plate. Craig Massoni hit his second home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth inning.

 

Gateway will resume action Friday night in the series opener against the Traverse City Beach Bums. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. All of the action can be heard on the Grizzlies Media Network.
