GRIZZLIES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CHANCES, FINISH TRIP WITH WIN
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Gateway Grizzlies (2-7) came from behind with runs in the seventh and ninth innings Sunday night to salvage the series with a win over the Evansville Otters (5-4) by a final score of 3-2.
After neither team made an error for the first eight innings, Evansville made two in the ninth inning, the latter of which allowed Bre'Shon Kimbell to score the eventual winning run from third on a Zach Lavy strikeout when Evansville catcher Dane Phillips' throw hit Lavy in the leg and bounded away.
Terry McClure had scored the tying run for the Grizzlies in the seventh on a wild pitch after he tripled to lead off the inning. Four of Gateway's five hits went for extra bases — McClure and Lavy tripled; Cody Livesay and Evan Rogers hit back-to-back doubles in the third inning, scoring the Grizzlies' first run.
Evansville's two runs both came on Brandon Soat RBI singles. The Otters managed only one extra-base hit for the ballgame.
Grizzlies starter Will Landsheft went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked four, ending up with a no-decision.
The Gateway bullpen was terrific — Mike Elwood, Ja'Vaun West, and Kaleb Earls threw the remaining 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run. Evansville put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth on an error and a walk, but Earls finished off his first save of the year.
Next up, the Grizzlies return home for a three-game series starting Tuesday against Lake Erie at GCS Credit Union Ballpark before going back on the road for a three-game weekend set at Windy City.
